Infrastructure boost for Gold Coast prior to Commonwealth Games

It has been revealed that over $100 million will be spent fixing Gold Coast roads and developing the roads to minimise traffic for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Areas such as Coomera, Pimpama and Upper Coomera will be heavily affected by the games.

Peter Catanzariti from Ray White Upper Coomera says “The northern Gold Coast suburbs will benefit greatly from these road upgrades, minimising traffic around these areas particularly whilst the Commonwealth Games are taking place”.

During the games, it is expected that there may be up to $1.2 million spectators. In addition, the city will be the host of 3000 media personnel, 50,000 workers and volunteers and 6600 athletes and officials.

A number of areas will be included in the major upgrade. $3.2 million will be spent upgrading the intersection at High and Smith Street in Southport, linking in with the $104 million Bundall Road upgrade. In addition, a reconstruction will begin on Beattie Road, the street that the Coomera Indoor Sports centre is located on. The reconstruction will take place from Beattie Road through to Foxwell Road and will cost around $620,000.

Tom Tate has said that one of the major road upgrades will be completed by the end of this year, to put the city in the best position for when the Commonwealth Games begin.

In addition to all of this, roads from Hope Island all the way down to Coolangatta will have dedicated Game-only lanes to ensure that athletes and officials don’t get caught in traffic jams.
