Civic hub proposed for northern Gold Coast suburb of Coomera

The City of Gold Coast has revealed preliminary designs for a large, multi-purpose “civic hub” in Coomera.

The proposal calls for a building to be placed on a site next to Westfield Coomera and within close proximity to Coomera Train Station. The building would include a library, co-working spaces for non-profit organisations, a theatre, a customer service centre and offices for councillors.

It is predicted that by 2041, the population of the Northern Gold Coast will increase by more than double to approximately 200,000. This new centre is intended to cater to this predicted population. The design will also allow for the expansion of council services.

Peter Catanzariti, Principal of Ray White Upper Coomera believes that this new project will be a fantastic addition to our local area. “The population of our local area is growing very quickly and the new Civic hub proposed for Coomera will bring even more convenience to residents. I look forward to seeing the project progress”.

The council responded to a query from ArchitectureAU and declined to name the architect involved in producing the preliminary design. They responded by saying “Much of the details around the project, including design and funding, are commercial in confidence”.

The new building design is an Australia-wide trend, where civic organisations and council facilities are combined into a single building. Similar projects to this include a planned complex in Coffs Harbour by BVN and the Victorian Government’s “GovHub” projects in Ballarat, Bendigo and the Latrobe Valley.

Combining these types of facilities aims to reduce cost and create more convenience.

The council agreed to progress the project at a meeting on 19 February. It will now pursue contracts for the building’s delivery, including the detailed design process.
